- earth II
encaustic/photocopy transfer
Gratitude for nature, this beautiful world in which we live, is an on-going theme in my work. This painting inspired the use of earth tones, and many layers scrapped into, to reveal the beauty 'within'. - expressive
encaustic/photocopy transfer/collage on wood
The Queen Anne's lace during the fall of '06 really caught my eye, the shapes were like fireworks, full of gesture and expression. They inspired many pieces; this being one. - faith, faith, she was not lost
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
In the woods, I sometimes find myself in a new place - otherwise known as ‘lost’. It’s during these times that I have to stop, and find a path. This can only happen if I keep fear at bay... calmly and slowly making my way by faith. - grace notes
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
Lily pollen, golden birch bark, musical ‘grace’ notes, tree branches tracing the sky and rusted barbed wire combine to capture a sense of the precarious balance between beauty and chaos. - reflection
encaustic/photocopy transfer/collage
The Queen Anne's lace in the snow last winter captivated me, making a beautiful purple blue shadow on the snow. Gouging into the wax to 'complete' the picture is a playful way to experiment with line. - rest, rise, fall, rest
encaustic/collage
Five orchids float in a pink-orange circle... containing the words of the title. This feels like a complete circle: the cycle of a day. - rests
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
Lily pollen, golden birch bark, musical ‘rests’, tree branches tracing the sky and rusted barbed wire combine to capture a sense of the precarious balance between beauty and chaos. - a conncetion
encaustic/collage
Using my journal entries, or fragments of writing that I’ve done over the years, I’m exploring the boundary between the public and the private - the words layered into the wax are read-able, but only with some focused attention. - the day it all made sense
encaustic/photocopy transfer/collage
More playing with the Queen Anne's lace in winter, this time by gouging the stems into graceful curves that are fanciful rather than 'correct '. - the day the wind blew through my heart
encaustic/photocopy transfer/collage
The branches of a tamarack tree made a loose and beautiful grid, that gave me freedom to play as I gouged the lines around the photographic transfer. The day I took the photo, it was very windy, the kind of wind that blows away what is not needed. - the tale of today
collage/encaustic on wood
Made during the February Retreat in Elora, this small encaustic collage has many layers of meaning for me. During this time of intense exploration, it revealed to me much about my creative process. - being wild
encaustic/photocopy transfer on wood/beehive/rocks/slides/bee
Inspired by the hive, the place where wax originates, I marveled at the ingenuity and wild nature of bees. This is an homage to them, tapping into and celebrating the 'wild' in all its forms. - belonging
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
A theme I've been exploring this summer, the idea of belonging... where do we feel we can be ourselves, what constitutes 'home'? The tulip is at home where it can grow, belonging to the earth. - tree series: below and within II
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
A found object, in this case a rusty link in a chain - features prominently in the wax - capturing a transfer of a beetle. Roots are imbedded in the wax, with earth, rocks, and other found objects. - tree series: all that is above and beyond II
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
A found object, in this case a rusty link in a chain - features prominently in the wax - capturing a transfer of a butterfly. Roots are imbedded in the wax, with earth, rocks, and other found objects. - tree series: above and below
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
The ‘sentinels’ continue to inspire me, this time the photo is transferred onto two prayer flags below the trees - with not even traces of the flags visible in the finished piece. A prayer for togetherness, and mutual support. The roots below grow around obstacles. - tree series: thank you, father sky
encaustic/metallic leaf/organic materials/photocopy transfer on wood
A companion piece to "ALL THAT IS ABOVE AND BEYOND"... this piece was also made out of four practice boards and is part of a gratitude prayer to the sky. - tree series: playing with boudaries
encaustic/roots/seeds/metallic leaf/photocopy transfer on wood
This hedgerow divides two fields and often is a destination on walks. There is such diversity in this thin line of growth...and it bridges the distance between the tamarak on one end and the ancient, twisted maple on the other. - tree series: rooted
encaustic/roots/sand/metallic leaf/photocopy transfer on wood
Two trees growing together have their branches intertwined and each other to lean on for support. There is also the mirroring in the roots, as they become one, and wrap around the stone buried below. - tree series: echoing
encaustic/sand/ash/carbon paper/photocopy transfer on wood
The two trees are the same, but also treated very differently. Here I was experimenting with positive and negative images and also with a very limited colour palette. - tree series: hope
encaustic/collage/fabric/glass/photocopy transfer on wood
A fragment of a note with the word 'hope' written by an old and dear friend is placed under the broken glass at the root of the tree. Hope, there below the surface. - tree series: alone...?
encaustic/roots/metallic leaf/stones/photocopy transfer on wood
A meditation on aloneness and connection. This tree stands alone, but is so very connected to the earth, the sky, the trees nearby, and me - the observer. This is a place where I would stop and rest when out skiing last winter. - tree series: yearning
encaustic/photocopy on wood
This tree appears again and again in my art - as I explore the endless possibilities of joining and repetition, then playing with the negative image, as I did in the top section of this one. - tree series: uprooted
encaustic/photocopy transfer/collage/ash/earth/found object/rust/roots
This rusted spring has been waiting for inclusion in a piece, it's spiral shape connecting with the root, Moving on and shifting into new ways of being are explored here, inspired by our oldest son leaving home. - tree series: sentinels
encaustic/collage
These two tall pines stand on the western edge of our property, and have weathered many storms, regrown new tops and continued to grow...standing watch over us. - tree series: mother root
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
This tree I saw and photographed last spring in California - and its shape was astonishing. The root was a gift, and it fit with this wind-blown tree. The roots divide around a rusted piece of metal, anchoring the tree. - tree series: all that is above and beyond
encaustic/metalllic leaf/organic materials/photocopy transfer on wood
This small piece was made out of four "practice" boards (for experimentation purposes during the InterPLAY show) and is part of a prayer to the sky - one of gratitude for "all that is above and beyond." - tree series: it happend so fast (meltdown island)
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer
For the first time, a piece melted last summer when I left it in the car. So, I re-worked it, with the ‘island’ emerging from the ruined piece, as an oasis. There is a lot of gouging down to the original work, which had a very rich and colourful palette. - tree series: 100 missing inches
encaustic/aluminum leaf/thorns/seeds/photocopy transfer on wood
Long story. - tree series: ad infinitum
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer on wood
Subtle colour, gouging and play led me to this piece that explores the ideas of loving deeply, repetition of shapes, and moving away from the center. There is much imbedded in the layers below that tell the story of this piece. - tree series: moving heaven and earth
encaustic/photocopy transfer/earth/ash/roots/found object/rust
Here is an explanation of trying too hard ... resulting in one being wrenched out of a comfort zone - roots and all. - tree series: retreat
encaustic/collage/photocopy transfer on wood
This amazing tree house caught my eye, as the perfect retreat. It evoked memories of summer afternooons spent reading in a backyard maple, the branches and leaves becoming 'home'. - tree series: the long view (buried treasure) - triptych
encaustic/ photocopy transfer/collage/roots/soil/delphinium petals
The triptych tells a story of the landscape (near my home, a hedgerow I've been working with) seen from the tree house on the far left. A tree house without a ladder ... some effort is required to get there. Roots dig below the earth, and flower petals swirl in the dusky sky above. - tree series: the long view (buried treasure) #1
